Argentina players banned for 18 matches over World Cup final incident
FIFA's Disciplinary Committee has handed down suspensions to three Argentina players following the post-match brawl after the World Cup final between Argentina and Spain in New Jersey.
Leandro Paredes received the heaviest punishment — a 10-match ban. Nahuel Molina was suspended for seven matches, and Thiago Almada for two matches. Spain's Gavi received a one-match ban. Argentina staff member Roberto Ayala was also banned for one match.
Paredes and Molina were also fined $90,000 each, while Almada, Ayala and Gavi were fined $30,000 each.
The incident occurred after the final whistle, when Argentina's Paredes pushed Spain midfielder Gavi to the ground as Spanish substitutes ran onto the pitch to celebrate their 1-0 victory in extra time.
Paredes faced three charges of misconduct and physical aggression, Molina two, and Almada, Ayala and Gavi one each. FIFA had given all parties the opportunity to defend themselves before issuing final verdicts.
The suspensions apply only to international matches, meaning the players remain eligible to play for their respective clubs.
FIFA also launched disciplinary proceedings against the Argentine Football Association (AFA) for several incidents during the tournament, including discriminatory chants and gestures, match delays, security protocol breaches and displaying inappropriate banners, notably the 'Malvinas Argentinas' banner after the semi-final win over England.
AFA has been fined approximately €250,000 and ordered to play their next two home matches at 50 percent stadium capacity. A portion of the fine, $100,000, must be invested in an anti-discrimination programme.
