Argentina return to training with full focus on Switzerland quarterfinal
Argentina have resumed training with renewed confidence after their dramatic Round of 16 comeback against Egypt, turning their full attention to Sunday's FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinal against Switzerland.
Lionel Scaloni's side will face the Swiss in the last-eight showdown at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, with kickoff scheduled for 7:00am (Bangladesh time) on Sunday (July 12).
A major boost for the defending champions came as defender Cristian "Cuti" Romero trained without any restrictions after suffering calf discomfort during the closing stages of the victory over Egypt.
The concern was later diagnosed as cramp rather than a muscle injury, clearing the 28-year-old centre-back to feature against Switzerland. Romero had played a pivotal role in Argentina's comeback, opening the scoring with a powerful header.
Thursday's training session focused primarily on recovery. Players who logged heavy minutes against Egypt completed gym-based recovery and regenerative exercises, while the rest of the squad underwent on-field drills under the coaching staff.
With no fresh injury concerns reported, Scaloni is expected to retain the core of the starting lineup that inspired Argentina's remarkable turnaround in the Round of 16. The team's remaining sessions on Friday and Saturday will centre on tactical adjustments and final preparations ahead of the crucial knockout clash.
Argentina are aiming to keep their title defence alive, while Switzerland will be looking to pull off one of the tournament's biggest upsets to secure a place in the semifinals.
