Argentina returns home without Messi

The Argentina national football team is quietly returning home following their defeat to Spain in the World Cup final. However, several key members of the squad, including captain Lionel Messi, are not returning with the team.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) had previously announced that several players would depart for their respective destinations directly from the United States after the World Cup. While some will join their clubs, others will spend time on vacation. However, detailed information regarding who is traveling where was not disclosed.

According to local media reports, Messi, midfielder Rodrigo De Paul, and head coach Lionel Scaloni were not on the flight bound for Buenos Aires.

Argentina's state airline, Aerolíneas Argentinas, stated that no press conferences or official receptions have been scheduled for the national team upon their return home.

Despite the defeat in the final, the fans' affection has not waned. Thousands of Argentines gathered at the historic Obelisk square in the capital, Buenos Aires, lighting fireworks and congratulating the team. However, minor clashes broke out there late at night. Police used water cannons, tear gas, and rubber bullets to bring the situation under control, resulting in the detention of at least 15 individuals.

Meanwhile, President Javier Milei stated that he plans to discuss the possibility of declaring a future public holiday with the players to honor the team's performance in the World Cup. However, no official decision has been made on the matter yet.

Unlike the historic public reception given to the Argentine team after winning the Qatar World Cup in 2022, there will be no such state-organized events this time due to the loss in the final.
