Argentina-Spain 'Finalissima' cancelled
UEFA has cancelled the 'Finalissima' match scheduled between Euro 2024 winners Spain and Copa America and world champions Argentina. The match was set to be held in Qatar on March 27.
The decision was made due to the ongoing war situation in the Middle East and a lack of agreement between the two parties over an alternative venue and new schedule.
UEFA stated, "Due to the circumstances and time constraints, both teams have lost the opportunity to compete for the prestigious trophy in Qatar, which is extremely disappointing."
Although UEFA proposed alternatives including playing in Madrid, a two-legged tie, and neutral venues in Europe, Argentina rejected all proposals. With no agreement reached by the scheduled date, the match has been declared cancelled.
The Finalissima is traditionally played between the winners of the Copa America and the European Championship. In 2022, Argentina defeated Italy at London's Wembley Stadium to win the tournament's first title. The same year, Argentina also demonstrated their excellence by winning the World Cup in Qatar.
With the match cancelled, football fans have been deprived of the opportunity to witness a clash between Lionel Messi and Spanish star Lamine Yamal.
