Ariana Grande objects to Trump supporters using her song
Pop star Ariana Grande has once again expressed anger over the use of her music in political campaigning. This time, her 2024 hit "We Can't Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)" was used in a social media post by supporters of President Donald Trump, and Grande was not pleased.
On Thursday, the "Team Trump" TikTok account posted a video showing Trump walking toward a stage with the caption, "This shouldn't be controversial!" The post also used hashtags related to Trump, Grande and "MAGA".
After noticing her song in the video, Grande expressed her frustration in the comments, writing, "Never use my song again. And your truth is a lie."
This is not the first time Grande has clashed with the Trump administration or its supporters. Her music has been used in political posts twice in just two months, and she has protested each time.
In June, the White House used a version of Grande's song "Bye" in a TikTok video showing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers making arrests. Grande had strongly objected at the time, saying her song should not be associated with "barbaric, inhumane and abhorrent acts." The audio was later removed from the post.
However, the song "We Can't Be Friends" has not yet been removed from the latest post.
There have been several recent controversies over the use of artists' songs in social media posts by the Trump administration. Songs by Taylor Swift and Bad Bunny have also been removed from Trump-related posts.
In late July, singer Noah Kahan also publicly objected after the White House used his song "American Cars" in an Instagram post, saying he had never given permission for his music to be used in support of Trump or his administration.
The key question in such cases is whether artists' songs are being used to promote political messages without their consent. Grande's latest comments have once again brought this debate to the forefront.
Grande has previously spoken out on various social and political issues. This time too, without offering a lengthy statement, she made it clear through a brief remark that she does not want her song associated with the Trump administration's political messaging.
"Wait for Your Love" is a song about relationships, heartbreak and emotional complexity. Grande's objection to its use in a political context has made her stance even clearer.
Variety reached out to the White House for comment on the matter, but no response was received.
