Armed suspect arrested near Trump's California golf course

A man carrying a firearm was arrested near US President Donald Trump's golf course in California after authorities deemed his behaviour suspicious ahead of a fundraising dinner the president was scheduled to attend.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department identified the suspect as Janin John Tiele, 38, who was detained near Trump National Golf Club Los Angeles in Rancho Palos Verdes. Officers recovered a handgun and illegal ammunition from his possession.

According to investigators, Tiele was seen moving around different areas of the golf course, taking photographs and videos, and appearing to monitor security arrangements. He was arrested on Sunday afternoon on charges of carrying a concealed firearm and possessing prohibited ammunition.

Authorities said the operation was launched after plainclothes federal agents alerted local law enforcement to the suspect's activities. Investigators also discovered that the El Segundo Police Department was seeking Tiele in connection with a robbery case.

A subsequent search of the suspect's residence uncovered an AR-platform rifle, a .45-calibre pistol, body armour, high-capacity magazines, a large cache of ammunition and several notebooks containing what officials described as concerning writings.

California enforces some of the strictest firearms laws in the United States, including a ban on magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities said additional charges could be filed as the case develops.
