Army rescues on-duty Rab members from confinement

A RAB team was confined while capturing a businessman with weapons in Sreepur of Gazipur. Later, additional police and army personnel rescued the elite force men after about three and a half hours of their confinement.

The incident took place on Sunday evening at Barama intersection in Barama village of Barami union in Sreepur upazila.

Locals said that a Rab team conducted a raid on a battery-operated auto-rickshaw shop at Barama intersection at 5:15pm on Sunday. At that time, they detained the owner of the shop, Mosharraf Hossain, 40, along with firearms. However, hundreds of locals, including Mosharraf Hossain's family members, gathered there and confined the Rab members. During this time, the locals protested the detention of Mosharraf by throwing bamboo and wood at different places on the road and at one stage snatched him.

Later, police and Bangladesh Army members reached the spot and rescued the trapped Rab members.

Gazipur Assistant Superintendent of Police (Kaliakoir Circle) Mirajul Islam said: "We heard that Rab members were confined there along with two vehicles. We heard that they had come to detain the accused. On hearing this news, police members went there. We tried to stop the agitated mob. Bangladesh Army members reached there at 7:30pm. Later, the situation became normal at 7:40pm."
