In Guinea-Bissau, a West African nation, the military has taken control of the government amid tensions over the recent presidential election.

President Umaro Sissoco Embaló was detained following the takeover, which took place a day after both leading candidates declared victory in the contested polls.

A group of military officers, calling themselves the “High Military Command for the Restoration of Order,” announced that the election process is suspended until further notice.

Air, land, and sea borders have been closed, and a nighttime curfew is in effect in the country.

Opposition leader Domingos Simões Pereira has also been reportedly arrested. The coup was led by Denis N’Canha, head of the presidential guard, who detained President Embaló.

The military claims it now has full control of the country.
