Arrest warrant issued against Anurag Kashyap for 'insulting' Brahmin community
Bollywood's renowned film director Anurag Kashyap has found himself in a new legal quandary. A Surat court in Gujarat has issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against him for making 'objectionable' comments about the Brahmin community on social media. This drastic step has finally been taken after he ignored multiple summons from the court.
Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader and lawyer Kamlesh Rawal filed this case in the Surat court. He alleged that Anurag's comments hurt and insulted the entire Brahmin community and could spread hatred between different communities in the society. Based on the allegations, the court has registered a case under sections 196, 352 and 353(2) of the Indian Penal Code and ordered an investigation.
The controversy began in 2025 after the release of the first look of the biographical film 'Phule' based on the life of social reformer Jyotirao Phule. Director Anurag Kashyap made a counter-comment on social media after he strongly objected to some aspects of the film 'All India Brahmin Samaj'. The complainants claim that the comment made in April 2025 was ugly and provocative. When the post went viral, there was a storm of condemnation on the internet.
Earlier, Maharashtra lawyer Ashutosh J Dubey had also tagged Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and demanded action from the Mumbai Police. However, when the Mumbai Police did not take any final action, Kamlesh Rawal later filed a new case in the Surat court in Gujarat. This time, Anurag Kashyap is facing a non-bailable arrest warrant for not responding to the court's repeated calls.
