Arsenal crowned Premier League title after 22-year await
Arsenal ended their 22-year wait to be crowned Premier League champions on Tuesday (May 19) after Manchester City were held 1-1 by Bournemouth.
Mikel Arteta’s side secured the crown after City failed to win at the Vitality Stadium, where Bournemouth extended their unbeaten league run to 17 matches and sealed European football for the first time in club history.
The result confirmed Arsenal as English champions, ending a six-year trophy drought after finishing runners-up in each of the previous three seasons. The Gunners had moved within touching distance of the title with Monday’s narrow 1-0 victory over relegated Burnley, opening a five-point gap over City.
Bournemouth struck first in the 39th minute when teenage forward Eli Junior Kroupi curled home a stunning effort to register his 13th Premier League goal of the season — a new record for a teenager in a debut campaign.
City, still recovering from the emotional fallout of reports suggesting Pep Guardiola will leave at the end of the season, struggled to respond despite dominating possession. Erling Haaland eventually scored deep into stoppage time, but the late equaliser came too late to revive City’s fading title challenge.
The draw means Guardiola is set to finish without a league title for a second straight season — the first such occurrence in his managerial career. Saturday’s FA Cup triumph over Chelsea now looks likely to be the final major domestic trophy of his decade-long reign at the Etihad.
For Bournemouth, the point was historic. Andoni Iraola’s side are guaranteed at least a Europa League spot and could still qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League depending on final-day results.
