Artemis II astronaut captures moon photo by iPhone
The historic lunar mission of the Artemis 2 spacecraft is now attracting the attention of the whole world. During this mission, Commander Reid Wiseman took a remarkable photo of the lunar surface with his iPhone 17 Pro Max, wowing the world. Over the past few days, the astronauts of the Artemis 2 mission have been sharing various photos taken on their iPhones.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said that this is the first time that NASA has allowed astronauts to go into space with the latest smartphones. In addition to the four iPhone 17 Pro Max on board, the crew members are also using GoPro Hero-4 Black, Nikon D-5 and Nikon Z-9 cameras. The photos taken can be seen on NASA's Johnson Space Center's Flickr account.
The spacecraft passed by the moon and changed its course back towards Earth using the moon's gravity on April 6. At that time, the astronauts were taking the opportunity to take pictures of the scene through the windows of the Orion capsule.
NASA livestream commentator Leah Mustacchio said that the astronauts turned off all the lights in the cabin to get a good picture. Just then, Wiseman stepped in front of the livestream camera and showed a beautiful image of the lunar surface on his iPhone screen. He later confirmed that the image was taken using the iPhone's 8x zoom. Mission Control said that the giant hole seen in the image is the famous Chebyshev Crater.
It is not yet certain whether Wiseman's image will be sent back to Earth. However, it is known that it will be available when NASA updates its Flickr account with high-resolution images of the flyby mission.
