Asif Akbar to contest BCB election from Cumilla
Renowned singer Asif Akbar is set to contest for the councillor position from Cumilla District Sports Association and will also run for a director post in the upcoming Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) election.
Though best known for his music career, Asif previously played for Young Pegasus in Dhaka’s First Division Cricket during the 1990s and captained school and college-level teams in Cumilla.
Speaking from the US, Asif said his priority is to revive Cumilla's sports legacy, particularly cricket, which has lacked league activities for six years. He emphasised youth engagement, combating drug abuse and gang culture by restoring access to sports.
He also highlighted cricketing potential in surrounding districts like Noakhali, Feni, Chandpur, and Brahmanbaria, aiming for regional talent development.
Asif noted he initially had no intention to run, but took the decision at the urging of former and current Cumilla cricketers and organisers. He will cast his vote via e-ballot from the US, where he is currently touring for concerts.
Nomination forms for the BCB directorship will be distributed today and must be submitted by tomorrow.
