The White House is investigating the mysterious disappearance or death of at least 10 scientists in the United States, many of whom had access to classified nuclear or aerospace research information.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed the matter at a press briefing on Wednesday, April 15, stating that while she had not yet spoken with relevant agencies, the pattern was serious enough to warrant a formal investigation.

Among the missing is Monica Jacinto Reza, a senior aerospace engineer and director of the Materials Processing Division at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. She disappeared while hiking in California in June 2025.

Steven Garcia, a government contractor who worked at the Kansas City National Security Campus in Albuquerque, vanished on August 28, 2025. Anthony Chavez, a former employee of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, went missing in May 2025. Retired Air Force Major General William 'Neil' McCasland, former commander of the Air Force Research Laboratory, disappeared in February 2026.

Deaths have also raised concern. NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory scientist Frank Maiwald died in 2024 with no cause of death publicly released. Researcher Michael David Hicks, who worked on the DART Project and Deep Space 1 mission, died in July 2023, also with no disclosed cause.

The incidents come as the White House has directed NASA and the Pentagon to accelerate work on nuclear space reactors.

Congressman Eric Burleson has called on the FBI to formally join the investigation, stating that the number of disappearances among individuals involved in advanced research is highly concerning.
