A drone attack hit a crowded military graduation ceremony Thursday in the Syrian city of Homs, killing at least 100 people and wounding 240 more. The explosive-laden drones targeted a graduation ceremony attended by cadets' families, and women and children were among the dead.

There were concerns the death toll could rise as many of the wounded were in serious condition, Syrian Health Minister Hassan al-Ghabash said. The army blamed "terrorist groups backed by known international forces".

Syria’s military said in an earlier statement that drones laden with explosives targeted the ceremony packed with young officers and their families. There was no immediate claim from the rebels and jihadists battling the government in the country's civil war. The drone attack is believed to have been launched from opposition-held areas north-west of Homs.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres “expressed deep concern” about the drone attack in Homs. His spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said. Guterres condemned all violence and called for a nationwide cease-fire.
