At least 8 killed in fireworks shop explosion in China

At least eight people have been killed in a massive explosion and subsequent fire at a fireworks shop in China's eastern Jiangsu province. Two others sustained minor injuries in the incident.

The fire caused by the explosion was brought under control by around 4 pm. Authorities confirmed that eight people were killed, while two others suffered minor burns.

Investigations are under way, and those responsible have been taken into custody.

The Chinese New Year, also known as the 'Spring Festival', begins this Tuesday. According to the Chinese zodiac, this year will usher in the 'Year of the Horse'.

Following Sunday's accident, China's Ministry of Emergency Management has called for strict surveillance to be strengthened over the production, transport, sale and use of fireworks in all regions of the country. A ministry statement said that testing or setting off fireworks and firecrackers near shops must be strictly prohibited. Additionally, local governments have been instructed to identify potential risk areas and take necessary measures so that the public can celebrate a safe, auspicious and joyful Spring Festival.
