Atletico Madrid advanced to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the first time in nine years after edging past FC Barcelona 3-2 on aggregate, despite losing 2-1 in the second leg on Tuesday night (April 14).

Barcelona made a flying start at the Metropolitano Stadium, taking a 2-0 lead with early goals from Lamine Yamal (4’) and Ferran Torres (24’), levelling the tie on aggregate.

However, Ademola Lookman pulled one back for Atletico in the 31st minute, restoring their aggregate lead to 3-2—a margin that ultimately proved decisive.

Barcelona dominated possession with 71 per cent and registered 15 shots, eight on target, but failed to add to their tally. Atletico, who also had 15 attempts, relied on a resilient defensive display and a standout performance from goalkeeper Juan Musso.

The visitors’ task became tougher in the 77th minute when Eric Garcia was sent off, forcing Barcelona to play the final stages with 10 men.

Late chances from Robert Lewandowski and Ronald Araujo went begging as Barcelona exited the competition despite the win on the night.

Atletico, meanwhile, celebrated a long-awaited return to the Champions League semi-finals.
