Atuar Rahman's final tribute at Shaheed Minar, burial at Banani graveyard

Veteran theatre icon, actor and director Atuar Rahman will be laid to rest at Banani Graveyard following public tributes at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka.

His body will be kept at the Central Shaheed Minar from 3:00pm to 4:00pm on Tuesday (May 12) for people from all walks of life to pay their last respects, according to the Actors’ Equity Bangladesh.

Later, his funeral prayer (janaza) will be held after Zuhr at his residence premises adjacent to Ishpahani Century Arcade in Moghbazar, followed by state honours and burial at Banani Graveyard.

The information was confirmed by Rashed Mamun Apu, general secretary of Actors’ Equity Bangladesh, who said arrangements have been made for public homage before the burial.

Atuar Rahman passed away late Monday night at around 11:50pm while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka. His death has cast a deep shadow over the country’s cultural community.

Born on June 18, 1941 in Noakhali, he was a pioneering figure in Bangladesh’s post-independence theatre movement. Over a decades-long career, he contributed significantly as an actor, playwright and director.

Recognised for his immense contribution to arts and culture, he was awarded both the Ekushey Padak and Independence Award, two of the country’s highest civilian honours.
