Aung San Suu Kyi moved to house arrest from prison
Myanmar’s detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been transferred from prison to house arrest, according to state media citing a statement from junta chief Min Aung Hlaing.
The announcement said Suu Kyi would be allowed to serve the remainder of her sentence at a “designated residence.” A photograph released by state media showed her alongside two military officials, though no details were provided on the timing or location.
However, her son Kim Aris expressed skepticism over the claim, telling the BBC he has no proof that his mother is alive. He dismissed the circulated image as “meaningless,” saying it dates back to 2022.
“I hope it’s true, but I have no evidence she has been moved,” Aris said, adding that he would not believe the reports until he can speak to her directly or an independent party verifies her condition.
Last week, Suu Kyi’s lawyer said Myanmar authorities had reduced her sentence by one-sixth, though it remained unclear whether she would be allowed to serve the rest under house arrest.
Little has been known about Suu Kyi’s condition since she was detained following the 2021 Myanmar coup d'état.
The 80-year-old Nobel laureate was believed to have been held in a military prison in the capital, Naypyidaw, since her arrest.
Myanmar has been under military rule since the coup, when Min Aung Hlaing ousted Suu Kyi’s democratically elected government. He has since consolidated power, including assuming the presidency on April 3 in a vote.
