Australia secured a commanding 2–0 victory over Türkiye in a FIFA World Cup 2026 Group D encounter at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver on Sunday (June 14), overturning the flow of play with clinical counter-attacking efficiency.

Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Türkiye were repeatedly denied by a disciplined Australian defence and sharp goalkeeping, while the Socceroos made the most of limited opportunities.

The breakthrough came in the 27th minute when 20-year-old Nestor Irankunda finished a swift counter-attack to give Australia a surprise lead. The goal marked a standout moment for the youngster on his World Cup debut.

Türkiye responded with sustained pressure, controlling over 60 percent possession and producing wave after wave of attacks. However, they went into halftime trailing 1–0 after failing to convert any of their first-half chances.

Statistically, Türkiye attempted 26 shots with 7 on target and completed 616 passes at 91 percent accuracy, underlining their dominance in build-up play. Australia, in contrast, managed 8 shots with 4 on target but proved far more efficient in front of goal.

The decisive second goal arrived in the 75th minute when Connor Metcalfe capitalised on another quick break, calmly finishing inside the box to double Australia’s advantage and effectively seal the contest.

Türkiye nearly pulled one back late on through a brilliant free-kick from Arda Güler, but the Australian goalkeeper produced a crucial save to preserve the clean sheet.

Despite sustained pressure, Türkiye failed to break through, as Australia held firm defensively to complete a notable 2–0 win and begin their Group D campaign with maximum points.
