Australia did not get the win they wanted. They got something better — a place in the Round of 32.

The Socceroos were held to a goalless draw by Paraguay in their final 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage encounter, a result that proved sufficient to secure their passage into the knockout rounds despite a night of mounting frustration in Houston.

Australia dominated virtually every aspect of the contest — 56 per cent possession, 12 shots to Paraguay's eight, five on target to Paraguay's two — yet could not find the breakthrough, repeatedly denied by an inspired Orlando Gill who produced five saves of the highest quality to keep his side level and earn Paraguay a share of the spoils.

Nestory Irankunda, Cristian Volpato and Connor Metcalfe gave the Paraguayan defence a torrid evening, with Jackson Irvine and Aiden O'Neill providing relentless service from midfield. But the final touch that the Socceroos craved never arrived — four shots went off target, three were blocked, and every effort that did find the frame ran straight into Gill.

Paraguay, to their credit, were no passengers. Gustavo Gómez marshalled a disciplined backline throughout, Julio Enciso and Gabriel Ávalos threatened on the counter, and Patrick Beach was tested twice at the other end. Three injuries disrupted Paraguay's rhythm, while both sides received a yellow card each in what became an increasingly physical contest as the stakes grew clearer.

But for Australia, the final whistle brought not anguish but relief. The point was enough. The job is done.

The Socceroos now turn their attention to the knockout stage, knowing that a sterner test awaits — but also that they are capable of rising to it.
