Australia to make big changes to avoid whitewash against Bangladesh
Australia are preparing to bounce back in the series after the shock of a nine-wicket defeat to Bangladesh in Darwin. Following that loss in the first Test, multiple changes are expected in the playing XI for the second Test in Mackay. If they lose the next match as well, the hosts will face the embarrassment of being whitewashed in a Test series by Bangladesh for the first time.
After the failures in the first Test, a change in Australia's opening pair is almost certain. Jake Weatherald, who scored 23 and 0 in two innings in Darwin, has been dropped from the squad for the second Test. The batter had also struggled with LBW and bowled dismissals during the Ashes series against England. Despite making technical adjustments, he could not meet expectations against Bangladesh.
Matthew Renshaw has returned to the squad in place of Weatherald. Renshaw is believed to be the frontrunner to open the innings alongside Travis Head at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in North Queensland. He has two first-class centuries at that venue, which could provide added confidence for a Test recall.
However, Josh Inglis remains another option for the opening slot. The wicketkeeper-batter, who usually bats in the middle order, has also succeeded as an opener. He scored 40 and an unbeaten 125 for Cricket Australia XI against England Lions last November while opening the innings. However, Renshaw's experience and familiarity with the venue give him the edge for now.
It is not just the opening slot; Australia's team management also faces a dilemma over the No 3 position. Marnus Labuschagne, who scored 1 and 31 in the Darwin Test, remains in the squad but his place in the XI is not guaranteed. Inglis could be brought in to replace him. At the same time, Australia may consider an unconventional tactic, similar to the decision to move Travis Head to the top of the order during the Ashes.
Australia's batting failure in the first Test against Bangladesh was a major reason for the heavy defeat. Pat Cummins' side is now looking to turn things around by making changes to the XI and batting order in the second Test. Whether the reshuffled combination proves effective remains to be seen. Bangladesh have the opportunity to win the series, while Australia are fighting to save their pride. The second Test in Mackay is therefore crucial for both sides.
Australia squad: Pat Cummins (captain), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Matthew Renshaw, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc and Beau Webster.
