Australian music industry bans fully AI-generated tracks

In a decisive move to protect human creativity and artists' livelihoods, Australia’s recording industry has officially banned fully artificial intelligence (AI)-generated songs from its national music charts.

The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) announced that starting August 31, completely AI-created tracks will no longer be eligible for the official charts. However, tracks utilizing AI partially will still qualify under strict compliance rules.

To be eligible under the updated guidelines, songs must feature human-written lyrics alongside primary vocals and instrumentation performed by humans. Furthermore, any AI tools used in the production process must be legally sourced and fully authorized. Fully AI-generated compositions will also be barred from consideration for the prestigious ARIA Awards.

The policy shift follows recent chart disruption caused by an AI-assisted track. An Australian producer used AI tools to generate vocals and drum tracks for a revamped version of Madonna's classic 'Like a Prayer'. The track spent 16 consecutive weeks in Australia’s Top 20 Singles chart, peaking at number two in May.
