Australia's pace blitz sends Bangladesh to innings defeat in Mackay
Bangladesh's hopes of extending their historic success in Australia ended in a crushing innings defeat to the hosts in Mackay on Sunday (August 23), as a relentless Australian pace attack exposed their batting frailties.
After bowling Australia out for 210 earlier in the day, Bangladesh needed a strong second-innings response after conceding a 146-run first-innings deficit. Instead, the visitors were bowled out for a low total, handing Australia an emphatic innings victory.
Bangladesh had been reduced to eight wickets for 95 at the third-session interval, with Mushfiqur Rahim unbeaten on 29 and Taskin Ahmed on eight. They had earlier collapsed for just 64 in their first innings.
Mitchell Starc spearheaded Australia's attack, striking twice inside Bangladesh's first five runs in the second innings. He removed Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque in successive deliveries to put the visitors under immediate pressure.
Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto attempted to steady the innings, but Tanzid Hasan Tamim was dismissed for nine when he edged Pat Cummins to Starc. The wickets continued to fall as Bangladesh struggled to withstand Australia's sustained pressure.
Nathan Lyon broke the 27-run partnership between Shanto and Mushfiqur, before Starc dismissed Litton Das for another duck. Cummins then removed Mehidy Hasan Miraz for one and Hasan Mahmud for two in successive overs.
Starc completed his 10-wicket match haul by bowling Taijul Islam, further underlining Australia's dominance.
Earlier, Bangladesh had made a strong start with the ball on Sunday morning, dismissing Australia for 210 after the hosts resumed on 165 for eight.
Shoriful Islam removed Cameron Green for 67 with an inswinging yorker before Taijul dismissed Josh Hazlewood for six. Nathan Lyon remained unbeaten on 32, but Australia could add only 45 runs to their overnight total.
Shoriful finished with seven wickets, registering the best innings figures by a Bangladesh fast bowler against a full-member Test nation.
The defeat was a stark contrast to Bangladesh's historic win over Australia in Darwin, with their batting collapse in both innings proving decisive in Mackay.
