Austria 2-1 up after Jordan defensive error
Austria edged ahead once again in a finely balanced Group J World Cup fixture against Jordan, reclaiming the lead at 2-1 following an own goal in a match defined by momentum swings and historic milestones on Wednesday (June 17) at Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara.
The contest had already carried major significance for Jordan, who earlier in the match celebrated a historic moment when Ali Olwan scored their first-ever World Cup goal to level the score at 1-1 shortly after halftime. That strike had briefly changed the tone of the game, lifting Jordan’s confidence and bringing them fully back into contention after Austria’s first-half dominance.
Austria, however, responded by tightening their grip on possession and increasing their attacking pressure. Using width effectively and pushing their full-backs higher up the pitch, Ralf Rangnick’s side began to stretch Jordan’s defensive structure and create repeated entries into dangerous areas.
The breakthrough came during a sustained spell of pressure, as Austria delivered a sharp ball into the penalty area. In an attempt to clear under pressure, a Jordanian defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, handing Austria a crucial 2-1 advantage. The goal reflected the intensity of Austria’s attacking phase rather than individual error alone, as Jordan struggled to fully clear their lines.
Despite the setback, Jordan continued to show attacking intent, with quick transitions and direct play aimed at exploiting space behind the Austrian defence. Ali Olwan remained central to their forward movement, while the midfield worked to regain composure and disrupt Austria’s rhythm.
