Austria seals 3–1 win over Jordan in Group J thriller
Austria marked their return to the World Cup stage with a hard-fought 3–1 victory over Jordan in a Group J encounter at Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara on Wednesday (June 17).
Austria took the lead in the 20th minute through Romano Schmid, who finished clinically after Austria’s sustained early pressure. The goal came during a period where Austria controlled possession and territory, though Jordan remained compact and disciplined in defence while looking to hit on the counter.
Jordan grew into the match and produced moments of attacking threat through quick transitions, before finding a breakthrough early in the second half. In the 50th minute, Ali Olwan levelled the score at 1–1 with a composed finish, capitalising on space in Austria’s defensive line and becoming a historic scorer for Jordan at the World Cup.
The equaliser briefly shifted momentum as Jordan pushed higher up the pitch, but Austria gradually regained control through midfield dominance and wider attacking play. Sustained pressure inside the Jordan penalty area eventually forced a decisive error.
In the 67th minute, Austrian forward Marko Arnautović once again found the back of the net. However, after a VAR review, the goal was disallowed as Stefan Posch was found to have handled the ball in the build-up. The decision went in Jordan’s favour, and they narrowly escaped conceding.
Jordan, however, could not withstand Austria’s sustained attacking pressure for long. In the 76th minute, they were undone by misfortune when defender Yazan Al-Arab, attempting to clear an Austrian corner, turned the ball into his own net. The unfortunate own goal left Jordan shaken as Austria moved ahead 2–1.
The turning point came late in the 100th minute of stoppage time in the match when Salim Obaid was judged to have handled the ball inside the box while sliding in to block a shot. The incident went under VAR review before the referee awarded the penalty to Austria. Marko Arnautović stepped up and calmly dispatched the spot-kick into the top-left corner, restoring Austria’s lead at 3–1.
Jordan attempted to respond but found it difficult to break Austria’s defensive structure in the final third as the European side managed the closing stages with greater composure.
In terms of match statistics, Austria held 62 per cent possession compared to Jordan’s 38 per cent, while also registering 11 shots to Jordan’s 9. Jordan, however, were marginally more accurate in front of goal with 4 shots on target against Austria’s 3. Austria won 4 corners to Jordan’s 3 and committed 12 fouls compared to Jordan’s 6, in a match that remained physically competitive throughout. Jordan also picked up one yellow card, while Austria received none.
Despite the defeat, Jordan showed resilience and attacking intent, particularly through Ali Olwan, but were ultimately undone by Austria’s greater experience, depth and late attacking pressure in key moments.
Austria now begin their Group J campaign with three points, while Jordan are left to reflect on a performance that showed promise but lacked the decisive edge in both penalty areas.
