Austria-Spain encounter: Rangnick's plan to stop Yamal
Austria will face a strong Spain in the round of 32 of the World Cup. This much-awaited match will be held at the Los Angeles Stadium on Thursday (July 2) at 1 am.
Spain, ranked second in the FIFA rankings, is considered one of the tournament's title contenders. On the other hand, Austria, ranked 22nd, has made it to the knockout stage as an emerging power in Europe.
Ralf Rangnick's team dramatically secured the last 16 from Group 'J'. They reached the knockout stage with a last-minute equalizer against Algeria. Although Rangnick's high-pressing strategy has made the team effective in attack, their defensive weaknesses are still a big concern. On the other hand, Spain has proven their capabilities throughout the tournament. Their biggest strengths are keeping the opponent under pressure with ball possession, quick passing and organized attacks. The 2010 World Cup champions have been unbeaten in international football for more than three years, which has boosted their confidence.
Spain will be looking to Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Mikel Oyarzabal, Rodri and Dani Olmo. Austria, on the other hand, will rely on David Alaba, Marcel Sabitzer, Marko Arnautovic, Konrad Leimer and, if fit, Christoph Baumgartner.
Austria coach Ralf Rangnick said before the match that stopping Spain's young sensation Lamine Yamal would be their main goal. According to him, the less time and space Yamal can be given, the better their chances of stopping Spain.
Spain have the edge in terms of strength, experience and recent performances, but Austria's fighting spirit and Rangnick's tactics in the knockout stage could make the match quite competitive.
