Why Iran’s Chabahar Port has become new centre of geopolitics

To rein in Russia, US President Donald Trump has imposed a 50 percent tariff on Indian goods. Washington’s demand is that India stop buying oil from Russia. India buys crude from Russia, refines it and then exports it. The United States believes it is by selling oil to India that Russia is able to sustain its war in Ukraine. Now, to corner Iran, the US is moving with a new strategy. It wants to impose fines or sanctions on anyone using Iran’s Chabahar port. For India, Iran’s Chabahar seaport is extremely important, both commercially and strategically. At present, India is jointly running the port with Iran under a 10-year agreement.

On January 14, 2025, at the main auditorium of the National Museum during the 23rd Dhaka International Film Festival, I watched Shoroter Joba, a film directed by popular television actress Kusum Sikder. This film marks Kusum Sikder’s debut as a director. She also wrote the story, screenplay, and dialogue for the film. Shoroter Joba was produced under the banner of Impress Telefilm Limited and Pahardanga Pictures, jointly by Kusum Sikder and Faridur Reza Sagar.

Today, I watched Priyo Malati, directed by the young filmmaker Shankha Dasgupta, at Basundhara Cineplex. After a long time, and more specifically after watching Pantha Prasad's Sabitri, I watched another excellent Bengali film today. After watching this film, I have truly fallen in love with Mehazabien! Such beautiful and natural acting!
