Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala faces public demonstration
Members of a youth organisation staged a protest on Friday (December 19) in front of the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala, opposing recent remarks threatening to separate India’s northeastern “Seven Sisters” region.
The demonstration was organised by the Youth Tipra Federation, the youth wing of the Tipra Motha party.
Anticipating unrest, police heightened security around the mission, with Tripura Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak present at the site to monitor the situation.
According to BBC Bangla, security has also been visibly strengthened around the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata in view of recent developments in Bangladesh, sources at the mission said.
Leaders of the Youth Tipra Federation said remarks made by National Citizens Party (NCP) leader Hasnat Abdullah and others suggesting the separation of northeastern India were provocative and regrettable.
They warned that such statements are not only harmful to India–Bangladesh bilateral relations but also pose a threat to regional peace and stability.
The Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala was attacked by certain groups last year, prompting heightened concern over security at Bangladeshi missions in India.
