Bangladesh beat Australia in ODI after 21 years
Bangladesh celebrated a historic victory over Australia in the first ODI at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Tuesday, June 9, winning by 86 runs via the DLS method. This marks Bangladesh's second-ever ODI win against Australia, ending a 21-year drought since their first victory in 2005.
After being sent in to bat, Bangladesh posted 284 runs, courtesy of a career-best unbeaten 86 off 70 balls from Mossadek Hossain Saikat, who was playing his first ODI after three and a half years. Opener Najmul Hossain Shanto scored 67, while Tanzid Hasan Tamim made 54.
In reply, Australia were reduced to 156 for 9 before rain stopped play in the 43rd over. Taskin Ahmed struck on the first ball of the innings, removing Matthew Short. Mustafizur Rahman then trapped Marnus Labuschagne LBW. Captain Josh Inglis tried to rebuild but was caught behind off Nahid Rana for 51.
Nahid Rana was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4 wickets, the first Bangladeshi to do so against Australia in ODIs. Mossadek also contributed with the ball, taking one wicket. Cameron Green and Adam Zampa added an unbeaten 35-run stand for the last wicket, but the result was already beyond Australia's reach.
The last time Bangladesh beat Australia in an ODI was in 2005, when Mohammad Ashraful played a memorable innings. In the 21 years since, the two sides have played only two bilateral series, with Australia winning all encounters in ICC events.
