Bangladesh has won the SAFF U-20 tournament. They defeated India 4-3 in a tiebreaker in the final held in Male, Maldives. American expatriate Ronan Sullivan's goal in the fifth shot confirmed Bangladesh's title.
Bangladesh dominated the first half, but India was more aggressive in the second half. Despite being ahead in possession and attack, India could not trouble Bangladesh's defense or goalkeeper Mahin. Bangladesh also put pressure on India's defense several times with counterattacks.
Ronan's brother Declan was brought on the field after 15 minutes of the second half. Declan made a few attacks from his own end. At the last moment, he sent a great ball to brother Ronan from a distance. Ronan got the ball through the Indian defense and took a shot, but the goalkeeper stepped forward and hit him.
Bangladeshi expatriates filled the gallery at the Male Stadium on Friday, a holiday. Bangladesh and India know each other well as they were in the same group in the group stage. So India kept Bangladesh's American forward Ronan Sullivan under close watch. However, Ronan proved his skills and took several shots.
Both teams had multiple scoring opportunities. Bangladesh goalkeeper Mahin came off the post multiple times. Although he could not catch the ball twice, there was no danger. Bangladesh also could not score the desired goal despite repeatedly getting close to the opponent's box.
