Bangladesh crushed for 64, Australia stumble after losing 3 early wickets
Bangladesh were bowled out for just 64 in their first innings before Australia lost three wickets for 50 runs in a dramatic opening day of the Mackay Test, leaving the hosts 14 runs behind at tea.
Mitchell Starc produced a devastating spell to dismantle Bangladesh, taking 6-12 in 10 overs, including six maidens. He struck with the very first ball of the innings and never allowed the visitors to recover.
Bangladesh lost their first five wickets for only 12 runs, with opener Shadman Islam dismissed first ball. Tanzid Hasan Tamim, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mominul Haque and Litton Das followed as Starc completed his five-wicket haul in just 22 balls.
Pat Cummins claimed three wickets and Josh Hazlewood one as Bangladesh were eventually bowled out in 34 overs. Taijul Islam remained unbeaten on 11, while Shoriful Islam top-scored with 14 and added 25 for the final wicket.
Australia also stumbled in reply. Taskin Ahmed removed Matt Renshaw for 8 before Shoriful struck twice in the same over, bowling Travis Head for 22 and Marnus Labuschagne for 4.
At tea, Steven Smith was unbeaten alongside Cameron Green, with Australia still 14 runs behind.
Starc's six-wicket burst also saw him become the first bowler to take five wickets in 22 balls against Bangladesh in Tests. It was his 19th five-wicket haul in Test cricket.
The match also produced a rare first-ball record at the Great Barrier Reef Arena, with Starc claiming the first wicket from the first delivery of a Test played at the venue.
