Bangladesh envoy summoned by Indian Ministry of External Affairs
Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to New Delhi in India, M Riaz Hamidullah, has been summoned to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday afternoon (December 17), diplomatic sources confirmed.
According to an NDTV report, Bangladesh’s High Commissioner was summoned particularly over remarks made by National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Hasnat Abdullah. At a public rally, he reportedly referred to India’s northeastern states using the term “Seven Sisters” and issued a threat to sever the region from the country.
The development comes just two days after Bangladesh summoned Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka, Pranay Verma, to its foreign ministry in the Bangladeshi capital.
However, no further details on the reason for the summoning have been officially disclosed.
Diplomatic sources described the reciprocal summons as an unusual move that has sparked discussions in both countries’ diplomatic circles.
