The Bangladesh government has said it is "deeply mourned" by the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a “targeted attack”. In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday, March 2, sincere condolences were conveyed to the fraternal people of Iran.

The statement said such attacks constitute a clear violation of international law and norms. Bangladesh believes that conflict does not bring any solution; disputes can only be resolved through dialogue, mutual respect, and adherence to international law.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman held an emergency meeting on Monday afternoon over the escalating crisis in the Middle East. The meeting was attended by Foreign Affairs State Minister Shama Obaed, Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam, and representatives from relevant ministries.

In another statement, the government said it is prioritising the safety and security of over six million Bangladeshis living in the Middle East. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has instructed Bangladeshi embassies in concerned countries to remain vigilant regarding expatriates and issue necessary advisories to strictly follow local government directives.

The government has also expressed deep sorrow and condolences over the deaths of two Bangladeshis and injuries to seven others in missile and drone attacks in various parts of the Middle East. Saleh Ahmed, a resident of Barlekha upazila in Sylhet, was killed in Ajman, UAE, when debris from an airstrike hit civilian installations. One Bangladeshi was killed and three injured in Bahrain.

The four Bangladeshis injured in a drone attack near the civilian airport area in Kuwait are—Aminul Islam from Nabinagar, Brahmanbaria; Rabiul Islam from Santhia, Pabna; Masudur Rahman from Begumganj, Noakhali; and Dulal Mia from Chandina, Cumilla. They have received necessary treatment and are currently stable. The Bangladeshi ambassador in Kuwait personally visited the hospital to check on them.

The government said the Bangladesh embassy in the UAE is in close contact with local authorities and necessary arrangements will be made to send the bodies of the deceased back home once commercial flights resume.

On the other hand, the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation vessel 'Banglar Joyjatra' is currently stranded at Jebel Ali port in the UAE. However, all sailors on board are safe, according to embassy sources.

Expressing deep concern over the deteriorating situation in the Middle East, the Bangladesh government said it is closely monitoring the situation and is prepared to take all necessary measures to protect Bangladeshis abroad.
