Bangladesh’s dream of reaching the AFC Asian Cup ended in heartbreak after a dramatic 4–3 defeat to Hong Kong at the Dhaka National Stadium on Wednesday night.

Despite a spirited performance, a additional-time goal sealed Bangladesh’s fate and silenced a packed home crowd.

The hosts made a perfect start, with star midfielder Hamza Chowdhury putting Bangladesh ahead in the 13th minute, sending the stadium into jubilation. However, defensive lapses soon proved costly as Hong Kong launched repeated attacks, particularly exploiting the right flank.

Brazilian-born forward Everton equalized for Hong Kong before halftime, and after the break, compatriot Raphael struck twice — in the 57th and 74th minutes — to put the visitors firmly in control.

Bangladesh, however, refused to give up. Substitutes Jamal Bhuiyan, Shamit Som, and Zayan Ahmed inspired a late surge. Mohammad Morsalin reduced the deficit in the 84th minute, and Shamit leveled the score in injury time, igniting wild celebrations among fans.

But joy turned to despair moments later as Raphael completed his hat-trick in additional time, clinching victory for Hong Kong and leaving the home supporters stunned.

The defeat triggered frustration among fans, with criticism directed at head coach Javier Cabrera for tactical errors — particularly his decision to keep right-back Sad Uddin on the pitch despite repeated defensive failures.

With only one point from three matches, Bangladesh finished bottom of their group, bringing an end to their AFC Asian Cup qualifying campaign.
