Bangladesh gains international recognition as several regions liberated from Pakistan army
The day, December 7 was a turning point in the history of Bangladesh's Liberation War. On this day, Bangladesh's position in the international arena was strengthened, various important regions of the country were liberated from invaders, and the Pakistani army was militarily on the verge of defeat. Just nine days before victory, Bangladesh's independence struggle gained its final strength on this day.
Bhutan formally recognized Bangladesh's independence on this day, immediately after India recognized Bangladesh as an independent country on December 6. This recognition was the second formal international recognition and through this, Bangladesh's position as a new state in the South Asian region was further strengthened. At the same time, regional support for Pakistan decreased and international pressure increased. In addition, global public sympathy and support for the Liberation War became stronger.
At that time, many diplomatic historians referred to this decision of Bhutan as "laying the foundation of Bangladesh's friendly relations in South Asia".
Meanwhile, in the first week of December, the well-planned attack of the joint forces scattered the Pakistani army on various fronts in East Pakistan. The scene of that collapse became even clearer on December 7. Pakistan's defense lines collapsed one after another. The morale of the Pakistani soldiers reached rock bottom due to the breakdown of the supply system. In many places, the Pakistani army abandoned their bases and began to retreat in the face of the attack.
On the same day, the Indian Army Chief General Sam Manekshaw gave a message on the airwaves at 10 pm in Hindi, Urdu and Pashto. He said - final defeat is certain, so the Pakistani army should surrender without increasing the loss of lives. This announcement further broke the morale of the Pakistani army and this began the process of retreating in a dispersed state.
Several important districts and towns were liberated from the invaders:
The free zone began to expand rapidly across the country through the coordinated operations of the freedom fighters and the allied forces. The most notable progress of December 7:
1. Gopalganj liberated
The city of Gopalganj was liberated from Pakistani occupation. After a long period of exploitation and oppression, the city dwellers rejoiced in the joy of independence.
2. Chuadanga completely freed from invaders
Chuadanga was a strategically important area since the beginning of the Liberation War. On this day, the entire district was freed from invaders, which made the advance of the joint forces in the southwestern region easier.
3. Nasirnagar (Brahmanbaria) liberated
After fierce fighting, Nasirnagar in Brahmanbaria was liberated from the Pakistani forces. This victory expanded the liberated area in the eastern region.
4. Various towns in Jessore and Satkhira liberated
The border area of Jessore and various areas in Satkhira were liberated, as a result of which the Pakistani resistance on the western front collapsed and the penetration of the joint forces in the Khulna-Jasore corridor became easier.
At this time, great optimism was created among the people inside the country and in the refugee camps. At that time, Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra broadcasted the news of victory and kept the morale of the common people and freedom fighters high. People across the country waited for victory with the news of liberation of one area after another. Martyr families, people under house arrest, refugees understood that the final outcome of the war was not far off.
As a result of India's direct participation at the international level and the effective diplomacy of the provisional government of Bangladesh, Pakistan's position in the world community was under pressure. Bhutan's recognition on December 7 showed that the countries of the world no longer trust Pakistan's propaganda. Bangladesh's independence was being recognized on the world stage as inevitable.
December 7, 1971 is a historic and memorable day—the arrival of the sunrise of independence. The day when the emergence of an independent Bangladesh at the international level, the success of liberating important areas of the country, and the collapse of the morale of the Pakistani forces—all brought the light of victory closer.
Nine days later, on December 16, this progress culminated—Bangladesh gained victory.
