Bangladesh launches .BD second-level domain and modern reseller system
Bangladesh has officially launched the long-awaited .bd second-level domain (e.g., example.bd) to further strengthen the country’s IT and digital economy. This new domain system allows local entrepreneurs, startups, freelancers, and general users to use short, attractive, and nationally identifiable domains.
BTCL stated that before the launch, a three-month “Sunrise Period” was observed, allowing existing .com.bd domain users to reserve their .bd domains and maintain their online identity. This measure helps prevent potential name conflicts and cyber-squatting.
Simultaneously, the Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) has introduced a modern, transparent, and technology-driven reseller system, enabling customers to purchase domains directly through BTCL’s recognized resellers listed on its website.
To strengthen digital sovereignty and elevate domain management to international standards, BTCL has issued the following key guidelines:
Proper documentation must be provided to prevent domain misuse using recognized organizations and brand names.
Priority will be given to local government offices and institutions for .bd domain allocation.
Domains matching “gov,” “govt,” or other important state-related names will not be accepted. BTCL reserves the full right to immediately cancel any conflicting domains.
Any domain disputes will be resolved jointly by BTCL and the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC). Complaints can be submitted via email to info@btrc.gov.bd
Domains containing obscene, offensive, or provocative content will not be approved.
Reselling or leasing purchased domains to others is strictly prohibited.
Violation of any condition allows BTCL to cancel the domain without compensation or refund.
This initiative is expected to make domain management in Bangladesh more transparent, secure, and internationally standardized, enabling entrepreneurs to strengthen their global presence with short and nationally identifiable domains.
Experts believe this move will reinforce the country’s digital infrastructure and contribute to a more robust and sustainable digital ecosystem in Bangladesh.
