Bangladesh lose 6-0 to South Korea
Bangladesh women's football team suffered a 6-0 defeat to South Korea in the Asian Games. After conceding two goals in the first half, Bangladesh had two opportunities to reduce the deficit after the break but failed to capitalise on them. They then conceded four more goals in the final 25 minutes to suffer a heavy defeat.
Bangladesh coach Peter Butler made six changes to the starting eleven against South Korea at the Nagai Stadium today. After losing the first match 10-0 to North Korea, Bangladesh adopted a strategy of defending from the start. South Korea are also 94 places ahead of Bangladesh in the FIFA rankings.
Bangladesh had to withstand South Korean attacks from the outset. They fell behind in the 16th minute when Kim Min-ji's shot found the net.
Goalkeeper Rupna Chakma then made several saves to keep Bangladesh in the match. In the 33rd minute, after blocking a corner in the first attempt, Rupna also denied a goal from the rebound. Two minutes later, she leapt to fist away Chu Hai-ju's long-range shot.
However, Bangladesh could not withstand another attack in the 42nd minute. Jang Da-bin scored from a counter-attack to put South Korea 2-0 ahead. Just before the break, Da-bin had another scoring opportunity, but Rupna held onto her header.
Bangladesh changed their game somewhat in the second half. Monika Chakma and Rituparna Chakma tried to push forward with passes from deep, creating scoring opportunities.
In the 56th minute, Anika Siddique attempted to enter the South Korean box down the right, but was stopped by the South Korean goalkeeper. Two minutes later, Bangladesh got an even better opportunity. Anika latched onto Shamsunnahar Junior's through pass and shot towards the top corner, but the South Korean goalkeeper saved it.
After those two chances went begging, Bangladesh's path back into the match became difficult. In the 65th minute, Choi Yu-ri scored to make it 3-0. In the 77th minute, Ji So-yeon extended the lead further. Two minutes later, Yu-ri scored her second to put South Korea 5-0 ahead.
Bangladesh conceded again in added time. Ko Yu-jin scored in the first minute of stoppage time, confirming South Korea's 6-0 victory.
Having played two matches in the Asian Games, Bangladesh have now conceded 16 goals without scoring any. Bangladesh will face Myanmar in their final group match on September 21.
