Bangladesh script history with dramatic 2-1 win over San Marino
Bangladesh scripted a historic chapter in its football journey by defeating hosts San Marino 2-1 on European soil, securing its first-ever victory against a European nation.
The international friendly was played on Friday night (June 5), with defender Topu Barman emerging as the hero for the visitors by scoring both goals.
Despite playing away from home, Bangladesh enjoyed overwhelming support from expatriate fans who travelled from different parts of Italy to cheer for the team in San Marino, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of a home fixture.
The hosts made a confident start and controlled possession in the opening stages. However, Bangladesh gradually settled into the match and broke the deadlock in the 19th minute. A well-delivered free-kick from Hamza Choudhury was headed across a goal by Sheikh Morsalin, allowing Topu Barman to nod home and put Bangladesh ahead.
The lead, however, lasted only 14 minutes. A defensive lapse allowed San Marino to level the score through Nicolas Giacopetti, whose close-range effort found the net despite goalkeeper Mitul Marma getting a hand to the ball.
Bangladesh had opportunities to regain the lead before halftime, but Saad Uddin failed to capitalize after being put through on goal by Morsalin.
Head coach Thomas Dooley injected fresh energy into the side early in the second half, introducing Shamit Shome, Zayyan Ahmed and Sohel Rana Jr. The changes increased Bangladesh's attacking intensity, while Faisal Ahmed Fahim came close to scoring when his effort struck the post.
The decisive moment arrived in the 86th minute. Hamza Choudhury's free-kick from the right found Bishwanath Ghosh, whose volley created confusion inside the box. As Topu Barman rose from the ground, the ball deflected off his head and crossed the line, sealing a memorable winner for Bangladesh.
San Marino pushed for an equaliser during four minutes of added time and came close when a loose ball nearly crossed the goal line, but Bangladesh survived the late scare to secure a landmark victory.
The result carries added significance as it is Bangladesh's first win against a European side. Previously, Bangladesh lost to Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2001 and failed to register a victory in matches played on European soil.
With Topu Barman's match-winning brace and a disciplined team performance, Bangladesh celebrated a milestone victory that will be remembered as one of the most significant achievements in the country's football history.
