Bangladesh secure direct spot in 2027 ODI World Cup main event

Putting an end to all calculations, Bangladesh have secured a direct spot in the main event of the 2027 ODI World Cup. At the same time, it has been confirmed that West Indies will once again have to go through the qualifying round to reach the World Cup. For the two-time world champions, this will be their third consecutive appearance in the World Cup qualifiers .

Bangladesh, Afghanistan and West Indies were vying for direct World Cup tickets in the race. Among them, Afghanistan were the first to confirm their main-event berth by beating Ireland in Belfast. Subsequently, based on the current ODI rankings and the remaining matches, Bangladesh's direct qualification was also confirmed. According to the qualification rules for the 2027 World Cup, the top teams in the ODI rankings as of September 30 will secure direct spots in the main event. South Africa and Zimbabwe, as hosts, have separate quotas. Since South Africa are already in the top tier of the rankings, effectively the top nine teams from the rankings will qualify directly for the World Cup .

After Afghanistan's World Cup spot was secured, Bangladesh's position became practically safe. According to cricket media outlet ESPNcricinfo, the teams that will play directly in the main event are defending champions Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, England, Bangladesh, South Africa and hosts Zimbabwe. Bangladesh's biggest rival for direct qualification was West Indies. While the Caribbean side still have two ODIs against India before September 30, even winning both matches would not allow them to surpass Bangladesh in the rankings to earn a direct spot. Their participation in the qualifiers is now all but confirmed.

Securing a direct place in the main event gives Bangladesh more time to prepare. Meanwhile, West Indies, once a powerhouse of ODI cricket, must once again face the tough test of the qualifiers. Having to play the qualifiers for the third consecutive time reflects the recent decline in Caribbean cricket.
