Bangladesh suffer heavy defeat in Warm-Up match against Australia XI

Bangladesh suffered a stunning batting collapse in their final warm-up match ahead of the Test series in Australia, being bowled out for just 54 in their second innings against a Cricket Australia XI on Friday (August 8).

The collapse condemned Najmul Hossain Shanto's side to an innings-and-38-run defeat, delivering a major warning ahead of the two-Test series.

Bangladesh had made 263 in their first innings before the Cricket Australia XI responded with 355, securing a 92-run lead. With an opportunity to build a competitive target and test their batting under Australian conditions, Bangladesh instead capitulated in just 21.6 overs.

The chief architect of the rout was 22-year-old left-arm pacer Campbell Thompson, who produced a remarkable spell of 8-25 in 11 overs. Eight Bangladesh batters fell to the young seamer.

Thompson struck early, removing Shadman Islam for 6 and Mominul Haque for 6. Captain Shanto was then dismissed lbw without scoring shortly after play resumed on the final day.

Soumya Sarkar (5) and Mushfiqur Rahim (2) also fell to Thompson, leaving Bangladesh struggling at 36-4.

Tanzid Hasan Tamim offered brief resistance with 22, but wickets continued to tumble. Amit Hasan, who made four, was caught off Corey Rocchiccioli, before Mehidy Hasan Miraz departed soon afterwards to leave Bangladesh at 45-6.

Thompson completed his eight-wicket haul by removing Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain, wrapping up Bangladesh's innings. Hasan Mahmud remained unbeaten on 2, but had no partner left at the other end.

Rocchiccioli claimed the other two wickets for the Cricket Australia XI.

The heavy defeat leaves Bangladesh with plenty to address before the two-Test series, particularly against Australia's pace attack and the demands of batting in unfamiliar conditions.
