Bangladesh to play in ASEAN Cup in place of India

India has withdrawn from the FIFA-organised ASEAN Cup to play against Brazil. Bangladesh has been invited to replace India in the tournament, which will be held in Indonesia. The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) is moving towards a positive decision regarding accepting this last-minute invitation.

A special meeting of the national team committee was held on Friday afternoon to discuss Bangladesh's participation in the ASEAN Cup. Committee members present at the meeting have agreed to send the team to the tournament. The BFF is now awaiting formal confirmation from FIFA.

A major advantage for Bangladesh in participating in this tournament is that the BFF will not face additional financial burden. The organisers will cover the travel and accommodation costs of the participating teams, and teams will also be given money for participation. The ASEAN Cup Division-1, funded by FIFA, will be held in Indonesia from September 24 to October 4. The tournament features eight teams divided into two groups. If Bangladesh takes India's place, they will face hosts Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore in the group stage.

The tournament format is also attractive for Bangladesh. After the group stage, the winners of each group will advance directly to the final. The runners-up will play for third place. Similarly, the third-placed teams will play for fifth place and the fourth-placed teams for seventh place. This means regardless of their position in the group, Bangladesh will have the opportunity to play at least four matches. The tournament is also considered an important preparation for the national team ahead of the SAFF Championship, as they will get regular opportunities to play against strong opponents.
