Bangladesh women beat Myanmar, close to historic Asian Cup berth
Bangladesh’s women’s football team took a major step toward a historic qualification for the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Myanmar in a high-stakes qualifier held in Yangon.
Up against a side ranked 73 places above them, Peter Butler’s charges rose to the occasion with a spirited and determined display at the Thuwunna Stadium on Wednesday (July 2).
Rituparna Chakma was the star of the show, scoring both goals for Bangladesh. The midfielder put her team ahead in the 17th minute with a precise free-kick, giving Bangladesh a 1–0 lead going into halftime.
Despite heavy pressure from Myanmar in the second half, Rituparna struck again in the 72nd minute with a brilliant solo effort to double the lead. Myanmar’s Wynn pulled one back in the 88th minute, but it wasn’t enough.
Bangladesh held firm in the closing stages to secure one of their most significant victories in recent history — not just for the result, but also for what it means.
With this win, Bangladesh moves within touching distance of qualifying for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup for the first time. A win over Turkmenistan in their final group match would ensure they finish top of Group C, ahead of Bahrain, and book their spot in the tournament proper.
