Bangladesh women set to script new history with Asian Cup debut today
The footballers of red and green have already made history by qualifying for the Women's Asian Cup. Today, Tuesday, March 3, marks the beginning of a new chapter in that historic journey.
For the first time since its inception in 1975, Bangladesh is participating in the 21st AFC Women's Asian Cup. In their debut match, they will face defending champions China.
The match will be held at Sydney's Western Sydney Stadium in Australia, which has a capacity of 30,000 spectators. This Group B encounter will kick off at 2:00 pm Bangladesh time. T Sports will broadcast the match live, with online streaming available on Tapmad.
According to the FIFA women's world rankings, China is currently placed 17th. For Bangladesh, ranked 112th, this presents a tough test. Nine-time champions China have also played in the 1999 World Cup final. In terms of experience and tradition, China holds the advantage.
After more than four decades, the Bangladesh flag will once again fly in Asia's main football arena. However, this time it is not the heroes of the past but a new generation of women players who are stepping onto the field to create history. This is a glorious recognition of the country's long journey in women's football.
Following the men's team participation in the 1980 Asian Cup, women footballers have finally got the platform to prove their mettle in the continental tournament after such a long hiatus. Winning the SAFF Championship in 2024 has further boosted the team's confidence.
In their first match, Bangladesh faces Asian powerhouse China, with North Korea also in the same group. Despite the tough challenges, the team has set its sights on fighting in every match, particularly aiming to secure points against Uzbekistan.
At a press conference, captain Afeida Khandaker said, "We will try our best to do something good. The opponents China, North Korea and Uzbekistan are very strong teams. We will play according to the coach's instructions."
In this 12-team tournament, the champions and runners-up from three groups, along with the two best third-placed teams, will advance to the quarter-finals. Every match is equally important. The coaching staff has confirmed that fitness, strategy and mental preparation are complete. The federation president has also assured players of bonuses.
