A 33-year-old Bangladeshi man, identified as Mohammad Hachibur Rahman, has been charged in the United States with illegally voting in an election despite not being a US citizen, according to a statement issued by the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland on Tuesday, October 27.

US Attorney for the District of Maryland Kelly O. Hayes and Jimmy Paul, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Baltimore Field Office, jointly announced the charges against Rahman.

According to the indictment, Rahman knowingly voted in the November 2024 election despite not being a US citizen. The election was held to choose the president and vice-president of the United States, as well as members of the US Senate and House of Representatives.

If convicted, Rahman could face a maximum federal prison sentence of one year. However, actual sentences are generally lower than the statutory maximum, and the sentence will be determined by a federal district court judge in accordance with applicable law.

Hayes thanked the FBI and the Washington Field Office of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement for their assistance in the investigation. She also acknowledged Assistant US Attorney Philip Motsek, who is handling the prosecution.
