Bangladeshis detained in Malaysia linked to ISIS, says Police Chief
The Inspector General of Police of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Mohammad Khalid Ismail, has confirmed that several Bangladeshis detained in Malaysia are connected to the international terrorist group Islamic State (ISIS).
According to Datuk Seri Khalid, some of the detainees have already been repatriated. The New Straits Times reported on Monday, June 30, that these individuals were arrested under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA) for their involvement in extremist activities influenced by ISIS ideology.
“These individuals are suspected of directly participating in radical activities inspired by the extremist beliefs of ISIS,” said Datuk Seri Khalid. “While some remain in police custody for further interrogation, others have been sent back to their home country.”
The recent crackdown follows a coordinated security operation launched on April 24 across the states of Selangor and Johor. Authorities arrested 36 Bangladeshis suspected of establishing an extremist network promoting ISIS ideology and violent extremism.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail revealed that out of the 36 detained, five have been charged in Shah Alam and Johor Bahru Sessions Courts on terrorism-related offenses. Fifteen have been ordered to be repatriated, while investigations continue for the remaining sixteen.
Intelligence from Malaysia’s Police Special Branch indicates that the group was attempting to form a new cell modeled after ISIS. Their objectives included spreading extremist ideology within their community, fundraising for terrorist activities, and planning to overthrow the government in their home country.
Datuk Seri Khalid added that a detailed briefing would be held soon to provide further updates on the case.
