Bangladesh-origin Sullivan sets new MLS record

Bangladesh-origin footballer Cavan Sullivan has set another Major League Soccer (MLS) record, becoming the first teenager to contribute to a goal in five consecutive matches.

The 16-years-old Philadelphia Union forward achieved the feat by scoring in Sunday’s 2-0 win over CF Montreal.

Sullivan had previously become the youngest player in MLS history to contribute to goals in four consecutive matches, achieving the feat at 16 years and 336 days.

Philadelphia took the lead in the 57th minute through Danley Jean Jacques before Sullivan doubled the advantage in the 75th.

Sullivan’s goal was the highlight of the match. After a Philadelphia player was stopped by Montreal goalkeeper while attempting a shot inside the box, Sullivan raced in from behind and fired the loose ball into the net with a first-time finish, weaving past several defenders on the way.

The goal took Sullivan’s tally for Philadelphia this season to four, while he has also registered seven assists. His 11 direct goal contributions make him the most productive player aged 16 or under in a single MLS season.

Sullivan surpassed the previous record held by Freddy Adu, who recorded 10 goal contributions in 2005, scoring four goals and providing six assists.

The youngest of four Sullivan brothers, Cavan has emerged as one of MLS’s most talked-about young talents with a string of record-setting performances at an exceptionally young age.
