Bangladesh Cricket Board director M Nazmul Islam has come under heavy criticism over a social media comment about former national team captain Tamim Iqbal.

The controversy erupted after Tamim’s remarks on the BCB’s decision not to participate in the upcoming T20 World Cup in India. In response, Nazmul Islam posted a strongly worded statement on Facebook.

The BCB finance committee chairman shared a photocard quoting Tamim Iqbal and wrote, “This time, the people of Bengal have witnessed the emergence of yet another proven Indian agent with their own eyes.”

The post immediately triggered widespread backlash on social media. Facing intense criticism, Nazmul Islam deleted the post late at night.

Earlier, in a media interview, Tamim Iqbal commented on the decision not to play the World Cup in India, saying the exclusion of Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL was undoubtedly disappointing. He added that such sensitive issues should be handled with careful consideration rather than hasty remarks.

Tamim said that if he were on the board, he would take decisions based on the country’s future and long-term interests. He noted that many issues could be resolved through discussion and dialogue, stressing that Bangladesh’s position and future in international cricket should receive the highest priority.

Regarding government intervention, Tamim Iqbal said the Bangladesh Cricket Board should be viewed as an independent institution. While acknowledging the government as a major stakeholder, he emphasised that the board must retain the capacity to make its own decisions. He also pointed out that the long-term impact of today’s decisions, particularly given the ICC’s role as a major source of income for the board, should be carefully considered.

Nazmul Islam’s comment reignited controversy soon after Tamim’s remarks spread across social media.

It may be noted that Nazmul Islam was elected as a BCB director from the club category in the board election on October 6. Alleging irregularities and government interference in that election, Tamim Iqbal and several other candidates had withdrawn their nominations at the time.
