BCB faces major uncertainty over BPL hosting

A cloud of major uncertainty hangs over whether the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) will take place this year. Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Tamim Iqbal has indicated that the tournament may not be held this year. However, he is not in favour of permanently scrapping the competition. Instead, the BCB president has expressed his stance on organising the BPL in a more organised and professional manner in the future .

In an interview with a national daily, Tamim Iqbal spoke about the future of the BPL, saying, "The BPL may not happen this year." However, he added that the BPL Governing Council chairman would be able to provide more details on the final decision. Tamim stated that personally, he would prefer to organise the tournament in a way where the main focus is on cricket, players' performances and the on-field action, rather than cancelling it .

"My personal wish is to organise the BPL in a well-structured manner. Where discussions will be about the game and wins and losses," Tamim said. "I don't want negative news about money matters." According to him, the BPL is not just a domestic T20 competition; it represents Bangladesh cricket on the international stage. Therefore, protecting the tournament's image is the responsibility of the BCB .

"We will not do the BPL for the sake of the BPL," Tamim stated. He believes the BPL is a fantastic product with great potential, but its persistent problems need to be fixed. He highlighted that the biggest challenge has always been selecting the right franchises, as payment issues have been a recurring problem every year, with a lack of financial solvency from certain owners forcing the BCB to step in .

Addressing concerns about Bangladesh's preparation for the 2028 T20 World Cup, Tamim said that even if the BPL is not held this year, organising the tournament well in 2027 is still possible. He also noted that there are other T20 tournaments in the country to provide opportunities for players .

Regarding the potential series between Bangladesh and India, Tamim could not provide any definite information. He confirmed that there is regular communication between the BCB and the BCCI but also spoke about his limitations on the matter. "I have said before, I have my limitations. As the board president, I have done as much as I can. I do not wish to overstep our boundaries," he said. He mentioned that a series against India is always enjoyable for fans but refrained from making any further specific comments .

Overall, Tamim's statements made it clear that a final decision on this year's BPL has not yet been made. However, if the BCB does organise the tournament, the board is focused on making it more organised and prestigious, free from the problems of the past. If it is not possible this year, the plan is to bring back the tournament in a better way in 2027 .
