Group G: Belgium banking on attacking football

Belgium, one of Europe's strongest teams, has further established its position in world football in recent years. The team is currently ranked 9th in the FIFA rankings. Belgium is known for its attacking play, technical prowess and quick passing. Although the team, built on a mix of experienced and young players, has yet to win a major trophy, they enter every tournament as title contenders — and this time will be no different.

World Cup record and participation
Belgium are regular participants in the World Cup. They reached the semi-finals in 1986, which remained their best achievement for a long time. However, in the 2018 World Cup, they delivered an outstanding performance to finish third — the best result in their history. Because of consistently strong performances in major tournaments, Belgium can no longer be called underdogs; they are now among the favourites.

Strengths
Belgium's biggest strength is their attack. With fast wing play, precise passing and long-range shots, they can put pressure on opponents. Their midfield control and ability to create attacks are highly notable. The team also has the ability to transition quickly from defence to attack. Additionally, individual skills of players are very high, capable of turning matches around in difficult moments. They are also effective from set-pieces.

Weaknesses
However, Belgium do have some weaknesses. Defensive coordination is sometimes lacking, especially against quick counter-attacks. With some ageing players, maintaining pace in the latter stages of matches becomes difficult. Moreover, their consistency tends to drop under pressure in big matches. If opponents build a strong defence, Belgium sometimes struggle to create goal-scoring opportunities.

Key players
The current squad boasts several star players. Thibaut Courtois, who plays for Real Madrid, is a key figure in goal. In defence, Jan Vertonghen, who plays for Anderlecht, leads the backline with his experience. In midfield, Kevin De Bruyne of Manchester City is the team's playmaker, playing a crucial role in building attacks and creating goals. Romelu Lukaku, the top striker of AS Roma, is Belgium's main weapon in attack, with excellent goal-scoring and assisting ability. Jeremy Doku of Manchester City and Youri Tielemans of Aston Villa add pace and creativity to the team.

Group opponents
Belgium's group stage opponents are strong and competitive. They will need to maintain their dominance in every match. Although they have experience playing against European and Asian teams, tactical variety will be required to break down opponents' strategies.

Prospects for this World Cup
Belgium are considered one of the title favourites for this World Cup as well. If they can maintain consistency in their attack and overcome defensive weaknesses, they have the potential to go far. Properly utilising team coordination and experience, Belgium could play a major role in the title race this time.
