Bengali literary legend Prafulla Roy passes away
Renowned Bengali author and literary icon Prafulla Roy has passed away at the age of 91.
He breathed his last around 3.00pm on Thursday (June 19), according to Indian media outlet TV Nine, casting a deep pall of sorrow over the Bengali literary community.
Born in 1934 in the Dhaka district of present-day Bangladesh, Prafulla Roy migrated to India with his family in 1950 following the partition. He began his literary journey in the 1950s, writing serialized novels in newspapers, and quickly gained popularity for his powerful storytelling and deep insight into social realities.
Roy authored over 150 works, including novels and short stories, many of which became deeply influential in Bengali literature. His writing vividly portrayed the struggles of the middle class, human emotions, and complex social dynamics. His most famous work, 'Nona Jol Mithe Mati', became a landmark novel that resonated with readers across generations.
Other notable works by Roy include 'Keya Patar Nauka, 'Shoto Dharay Boye Jay', 'Uttal Somoyer Itikotha', 'Mondo Meyer Upakkhyan', 'Shankhini', and 'Krantikaal'.
